Designing a Flexible POS App with Flutter: A Journey of Continuous Improvement

In this article, I’ll create a Point of Sale (POS) app using Flutter, in which I developed it without relying on a predetermined design. In this project, I have changed the design three times already. Some UI elements have been finalized, while others are still being improved to find the perfect fit and match my desired outcome.
I am currently working on a Flutter application that utilizes the Model-View-ViewModel (MVVM) architecture. This modern design pattern allows for a clear separation of concerns between the user interface, business logic, and data management. As part of this project, I decided to migrate from the previous state management solution to the GetX library. GetX is a powerful, feature-rich package that simplifies state management, navigation, and dependency injection in Flutter, leading to cleaner and more maintainable code.
Throughout the development process, I have made several adjustments to the app’s user interface, including the login screen. So far, the progress of the project stands at around 45%. However, some additional UI improvements are still needed, particularly for the History, Order, and Settings sections. In addition, I have yet to decide on the purpose of the top right area in the Home page’s navigation bar, which remains an open design question.
To handle the backend data for the application, I created my own API using JSON files and focused on implementing GET requests. This approach allows me to manage and retrieve data efficiently and effectively. As I continue to make progress on this project, I look forward to refining the user interface and implementing other required features, ultimately delivering a high-quality, user-friendly application that showcases the power and flexibility of Flutter with the MVVM architecture and GetX library.
In conclusion, the ongoing development of this Flutter application demonstrates the advantages of utilizing the MVVM architecture and GetX library to create a clean and maintainable codebase. While progress currently stands at 45%, with further UI improvements required in the History, Order, and Settings sections, the project is steadily moving forward. The custom API implementation, based on JSON files and GET requests, further highlights the flexibility and efficiency that can be achieved in a well-structured Flutter application. As development continues, the goal is to deliver a high-quality, user-friendly app that showcases the potential of combining Flutter, MVVM, and GetX for an enhanced user experience.
